Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery performed each year…and, unfortunately, often the most botched by surgeons who lack the proper education, training, and experience.

But what’s a person to do? Is there really a way to identify a good plastic surgeon from a bad one?

When we posed this question to Dr. Paul Vitenas—founder of Vitenas Cosmetic Surgery and a recognized Top Doctor by Castle Connelly year in and year out—his answer was an emphatic, “Yes!”

“The fact of the matter is that people can—and must—make informed decisions about who they choose to perform their breast augmentation surgery,” he explains. “I have fixed far too many failed breast augmentation surgeries to stay silent on this matter. It’s critical that people do their research.”

Ok. So not all plastic surgeons are equal. What should prospective patients look for?

The first step is confirming the doctor is board certified. “It’s easy to put a sign on your door that says ‘Plastic Surgeon’, but it’s not easy to earn certification from The American Board of Plastic Surgery,” Dr. Vitenas asserts. “I vividly remember the rigorous testing it took to earn my ABPS diploma. Today, I proudly display my certificate because it’s an indicator of my hard work and expertise.”

Dr. Vitenas also believes honesty is the best policy. You want a surgeon who will tell you the truth. “Not all women are good candidates for breast augmentation surgery,” Dr. Vitenas asserts. “That’s an extremely hard message to give, but it’s better than having them endure surgery only to find out it didn’t achieve the results they were looking for.”

Still, based on his experience having done thousands of breast augmentation surgeries—and more than 500 last year alone—Dr. Vitenas says most healthy women with small, under-developed or misshaped breasts are good candidates for breast augmentation.

That said, a good candidate to perform this intricate surgery will have many before-and-after photos of their work. If a doctor is hesitant to show their work—or is unable to show more than just a few photos of their successful surgeries—that may be a red flag. A quality surgeon should also provide easy access to authentic patient reviews and testimonials.

Dr. Vitenas has some simple advice on this matter: “Before a patient schedules breast augmentation surgery, they should carefully look over the doctor’s work history. Don’t be afraid to ask to speak with previous patients or to walk away if you don’t feel comfortable with the doctor’s level of expertise or experience.”

He also recommends working with a doctor who can clearly articulate every aspect of the surgery—no matter how technical—including the post-surgical experience. “Breast augmentation is a safer and more satisfying cosmetic surgery experience than ever before,” he explains. “Yet, many women think their recovery will take weeks and weeks. With today’s innovative techniques, most women are moving around and returning to light activities in only a few days.”

Dr. Vitenas’ decades of experience also reveal that if the surgeon does excellent work, the results look 100% natural and speak volumes of the doctor’s expertise. But, as Dr. Vitenas can testify, it doesn’t hurt to be a featured contributor in medical journals, as well as popular beauty publications such as Allure, Glamour, and Self Magazine.
